You Tube Video

Final Emergent Technology

For my final Emergent Technology I decided to use Youtube.com. For my project I recorded myself on Mac's iMovie feature. This program allows the user to record them-self making a video. Once I was done recording my movie it converted into a useable movie file.

Once my file I was converted I was able to upload the file to youtube.com. Youtube's uploading of my movie took more time than I anticipated. My movie file was quite small so I wasn't sure why it was taking as long as it was.

I never have used Youtube but since my personal email account is through Google it allowed me to use the same information for my account which was nice!

Once the movie downloaded I was able to change the settings of the video. I made my video private so only viewers I select can view the video.

For the project I decided to read the book "Fancy Nancy at the Museum" by Jane O'Connor and pictures based on the art of Robin Preiss Glasser. This book is a Beginning 1 Reader for students. A beginning reader has short sentences, familiar words, and simple concepts for children eager to read on their own!

For this project I decided to incorporate a Literature Circle. A Literature Circle allows students to choose their own reading material and work with a group. The students discuss the book and they have their own discussions.  A Literature Circle has eight different roles. These roles allow each student to play a part in the discussion. The eight roles are below:

1. Discussion Director -   facilities flow of discussion
2. Literary Luminary -  selects part of the text to read that are interesting, powerful, or funny
3. Illustrator - draws some kind of picture that represents the reading
4. Connector - finds connection between the book and life
5. Summarizer - prepares a brief summary of the reading
6. Vocabulary Enricher - identifies important words that are puzzling or unfamiliar
7. Travel Tracer - traces the scenes as they change in the book
8. Investigator - digs up background information about the book or author

I also read the book and let the reader know which page we were on. This could be used for beginning readers to follow along if the book was being played as a video on their computer. By knowing the page number they can follow along.

At the end of the story I go over the different roles of the Literary Circles and give brief ideas on what the students could use for their circles.

Students also could use a Literary Circle and post it on Teachertube.com. They could read the book and go over the different roles they had for the book. This could be useful for other students or for teachers to utilize in their own classroom.

2nd Emergent Technology

My experience with the 2nd Emergent Technology Program. I chose from the WIKI Scrapblog a free online scrap booking experience. I chose to use the preloaded templates (their were almost over a 100 different templates) and I chose to do a "Vacation Themed" scrapbook.
The only problem I encountered was uploading my pictures was very time consuming! However, once my photos uploaded I was able to begin my project. The photos layed very nicely into the templates and I enjoyed changing their sizes and positions within the page.
This technology was very beneficial for those of us who are craft challenged and who desire to have a scrapbook but know the end result will be messy! Since I made my Vacation scrapbook I made a Wedding, Pet, Friends, Family, and our House. These scrapbooks were very easy to share with the sharing feature. I was able to email the link to friends and family.
I was disappointed to find out when I tried to link it to my blog it would not load. I was able to use the above viewer option. I noticed on several other pages I was unable to view their scrapblogs however their tips and suggestions were very helpful! I always enjoy reading about other people's experiences while using new technology.
I would recommend Scrapblog to anyone - it's user friendly and your possibilities are endless!

Podcast

PODCASTING!!

For Part One of Emerging Technologies I explored "Podcasting!" This was the first time I even used a Podcast -  I know, I know they are available to me online but I never got around to listening to one.

This project was very frustrating for me. I operate on a MAC so I had some trouble finding the recording software - I could make movies, edit movies, the whole gamut but recording just me talking was difficult. After going through several MAC tutorials as well as the helpful postings from our instructor and fellow students I had an understanding on how to do this assignment yet no way to record. I finally was able to download a free trial of Record Pad that allowed me to utilize my built-in microphone.

I then had trouble saving the podcasting and loading my podcast onto Oncourse took me over an hour! After being a "PC girl" my whole life my husband bought into the whole MAC hype and convinced me that we needed one! I was okay with this because we still had our new laptop - well the HP laptop crashed so I have been forced to learn this operating system. I will be purchasing a PC this week - this project solidified how much i hate my MAC.

As for my Podcast I decided to read "Thank you, Mr. Falker" by Patricia Polacco. I was introduced to this book in Jane Leeth's summer reading course. I fell in love with this  book so it seemed like a natural choice to read this book. It was a loooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnggggggg book so excuse my rushing through it and ignore my tiny dog little barks - I kept trying to  hush her!

I know I look forward to hearing everyone's podcasts!

Have a great evening!

Creating a Blog!

This has been my first experience with Blogs! I know several of my friends have Blogs but unfortunately I have never visited their pages. I have always used the Facebook application as a way to stay connected with my friends and family (well - my sister, sister-in-law, brother-in-law and cousins!) I have always enjoyed Facebook as it allows me to update my profile, add new pictures, and comment on my friends pages.

Blogging was a new experience but it is very similar to Facebook. Creating my blog was easy for me however uploading pictures proved to be quite the task. It would not allow me to upload some photos that other sites have allowed me to upload.  I received an error messaging while uploading but it never indicated what the problem was but I found other pictures to add!

Blogging seems like a fun new way to communicate with others and I can see how it could be very beneficial in the classroom. I am looking forward to using my page for the semester.

I unfortunately do not have any tip for my fellow classmates but as you mentioned on the Module - make your page fun. This is YOUR page to personalize so add photos, update your about me section, and make it a reflection of your life. I have never been good at scrapbooking so I look forward to creating my virtual scrapbook.

Getting to Know Me

Hi, my name is Courtney and Welcome to my Blog!

I am 25 years old and I am attending IUPUI to obtain my second Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. I received my first Bachelor's degree from Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana. At ISU, I studied Textiles and Marketing. I was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority and I was the Pi Kappa Alpha Dreamgirl as well. While at ISU I met my husband and made some of my very best friends!

During my sophomore year at ISU, I knew I wanted to become a teacher. My grandma who passed away from breast cancer was a 2nd grade teacher and during that year I felt my calling to go into Education. However, I was established in my major and at the time I was ready to graduate and move on with my life. I graduated from ISU in 2005 and married my husband Adam on May 20, 2006.

I worked for a Non-for-profit company as an event planner the past two years. The job required monthly travel which I enjoyed but I was not happy with my profession. After much given thought I decided it was time to follow my dream and I enrolled at IUPUI.

While I have enjoyed being in school it has not been easy. I have been out of school for three years and writing papers, studying, and taking tests has been some what of a challenge for me. I feel so much older than all the students and my 19 year old sister's best friend is in one of my classes - I now felt really old! However, I keep telling myself that it will all be worth it when I am in my own classroom.

Besides school, I enjoy spending time with my husband and our dog. I also enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I enjoy traveling, waterskiing, snowskiing, wakeboarding, golfing, and shopping.
